NYSDA Weighs in on Criminal Justice Reform Legislation and Executive Budget. Governor Andrew Cuomo included several important criminal justice issues in the legislation accompanying the 2018-2019 Executive Budget, following up on his State of the State address and press release about his "five-pronged package" to address cash bail, discovery, speedy trial, and asset forfeiture and enhance the re-entry of incarcerated clients. NYSDA presented testimony at the legislative Public Protection budget hearing on Jan. 30, 2018, seeking funding for the Public Defense Backup Center and Veterans Defense Program at last year's levels and applauding the Governor's recognition of the need for pretrial justice reform. At the same time, NYSDA offered strong suggestions about improving the proposals regarding bail, discovery, and speedy trial law. The written testimony is available here. The budget hearings are/will be archived here.
